10 tips to help improve your wireless network

If the Windows operating system ever notifies you about a weak Wi-Fi signal, it probably means that your connection isn't as fast or as reliable as it could be. Worse, you might lose your connection entirely in some parts of your home. If you want to boost the signal for your wireless network (WLAN), try some of these tips for extending your wireless range and improving your wireless network speed and performance.
Couple at a laptop reviewing wireless channels

1. Position your wireless router, modem router, or access point in a central location

When possible, place your wireless router, wireless modem router (a DSL or cable modem with a built-in wireless router), or wireless access point (WAP) in a central location in your home. If your wireless router, modem router, or access point is against an outside wall of your home, the signal will be weak on the other side of your home. If your router is on the first floor and your PC or laptop is on the second floor, place the router high on a shelf in the room where it is located. Don't worry if you can't move your wireless router, because there are many other ways to improve your connection.
Bad router and good router placement comparison

2. Move the router off the floor and away from walls and metal objects (such as metal file cabinets)

Metal objects, walls, and floors will interfere with your router's wireless signals. The closer your router is to these obstructions, the more severe the interference, and the weaker your connection will be.

3. Replace your router's antenna

The antennas supplied with your router are designed to be omnidirectional, meaning that they broadcast in all directions around the router. If your router is near an outside wall, half of the wireless signals will be sent outside your home, and much of your router's power will be wasted. Most routers don't allow you to increase the power output, but you can make better use of the power. If your router’s antenna is removable, you can upgrade to a high-gain antenna that focuses the wireless signals in only one direction. You can even aim the signal in the direction you need it most. Consider a Linksys high-gain antenna—they’re powerful and easy to install. Or shop for other high-gain antennas.

4. Replace your laptop's wireless PC card-based network adapter

Laptops with built-in wireless networking capability typically have excellent antennas and don't need to have their network adapters upgraded. These tips are for laptops that do not have built-in wireless networking.
Wireless network signals must be sent both to and from your computer. Sometimes your router can broadcast strongly enough to reach your computer, but your computer can't send signals back to your router. To improve this, replace your laptop's PC card-based wireless network adapter with a USB wireless network adapter that uses an external antenna. In particular, consider a Linksys Wireless-N or Hawking Hi-Gain Wireless-N USB network adapter. These add an external, high-gain antenna to your computer and can significantly extend your wireless range.

Wireless router and wireless repeater

5. Add a wireless repeater

Wireless repeaters extend your wireless network range without requiring you to add any wiring. Just place the wireless repeater halfway between your wireless router, modem router, or access point and your computer, and you can get an instant boost to your wireless signal strength. Check out the wireless-N repeaters from Linksys, Hawking Hi-Gain, ViewSonic, D-Link, and Buffalo Technology, or shop for a wireless-N repeater.

Wireless channels

6. Change your wireless channel

Wireless routers can broadcast on several different channels, similar to the way radio stations use different channels. In the United States and Canada, these channels are 1, 6, and 11. Just as you'll sometimes hear interference on one radio station while another is perfectly clear, sometimes one wireless channel is clearer than others. Try changing your wireless router's channel through your router's configuration page to see if your signal strength improves. You don't need to change your computer's configuration, because it can automatically detect the new channel.
To find your router configuration page, consult this quick reference table, which shows the default addresses for common router manufacturers. If the address is not listed here, read the documentation that came with your router, or visit the manufacturer's webpage.

7. Reduce wireless interference

The most common wireless technology, 802.11g (wireless-G), operates at a frequency of 2.4 gigahertz (GHz). Many cordless phones, microwave ovens, baby monitors, garage door openers, and other wireless electronics also use this frequency. If you use these wireless devices in your home, your computer might not be able to "hear" your router over the noise coming from them.
If your network uses wireless-G, you can quiet the noise by avoiding wireless electronics that use the 2.4 GHz frequency. Instead, look for cordless phones and other devices that use the 5.8 GHz or 900 megahertz (MHz) frequencies. Because 802.11n (wireless-N) operates at both 2.4 GHz and the less frequently used 5.0 GHz frequency, you may experience less interference on your network if you use this technology.

8. Update your firmware or your network adapter driver

Router manufacturers regularly make free improvements to their routers. Sometimes, these improvements increase performance. To get the latest firmware updates for your router, visit your router manufacturer's website.
Similarly, network adapter vendors occasionally update the software that Windows uses to communicate with your network adapter, known as the driver. These updates typically improve performance and reliability. To get the driver updates, follow the instructions for your operating system:

Windows XP

  • Visit Microsoft Update, click Custom, and then wait while Windows XP looks for the latest updates for your computer.
  • Install any updates relating to your wireless adapter.

9. Pick equipment from a single vendor

Although a Linksys router will work with a D-Link network adapter, you often get better performance if you pick a router and network adapter from the same vendor. Some vendors offer a performance boost of up to twice the performance when you choose their hardware (like their USB wireless network adapters). Linksys has the SpeedBooster technology for its wireless-G devices, and D-Link has the 108G enhancement for its wireless-G devices. These enhancements can be helpful if you have wireless-G devices and you need to transmit over a long distance or you live in an older house (old walls tend to block the signal more than newly built ones do).
If speeding up your connection is important to you, consider the next tip—upgrading your wireless technology.

10. Upgrade 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g devices to 802.11n

Although wireless-G (802.11g) may be the most common type of wireless network, wireless-N (802.11n) is at least twice as fast and it has better range and stability. Wireless-N is backward-compatible with 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g, so you can still use any existing wireless equipment that you have—though you won’t see much improvement in performance until you upgrade your computer or network adapter to wireless-G, too.
If you're using wireless-B or wireless-G and you're unhappy with your network’s speed and performance, consider replacing your router and network adapters with wireless-N equipment. If you're buying new equipment, definitely choose wireless-N. Linksys Wireless-N routers, for example, are powerful, secure, and simple to set up. So are Linksys Wireless-N USB wireless network adapters.
Find out which wireless technology is installed on your computer:

Windows 7

  1. Click Start, and then click Device and Printers.
  2. Right-click the icon of your computer, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Hardware tab. Scroll through the list until you see your wireless card or adapter. Under Name, you will see 802.11n or Wireless-N, 802.11g or Wireless-G, or 802.11b or Wireless-B.

Windows Vista

  1. Click Start, click Network and Internet, and then click Network and Sharing Center.
  2. On the left, under Tasks, click Manage Network Connections.
  3. Double-click Wireless Network Connection, and then click Details. Under the description, you will see 802.11n or Wireless-N, 802.11g or Wireless-G, or 802.11b or Wireless-B.
Wireless networks never reach the theoretical bandwidth limits. Wireless-B networks typically get 2–5 megabits per second (Mbps). Wireless-G networks are usually in the 13–23 Mbps range. The average everyday speed for wireless-N equipment is about 50 Mbps.
Don’t forget—the security of your wireless network is as important as its speed and performance. Learn about the different security methods.

  • Make sure to turn off auto update of any software other than anti virus software on your PC. Schedule to get the downloads at a time when you are not working. This way your connection will remain active and you will continue to have updated software version as well.
  • If you plan to download a large file, then do so with a download manager. That way even if lose the connection in the middle of a download, you do not have to start from scratch.
  • If you aren’t computer-savvy, avoid using VOIP (Voice over IP), which can cause problems.
  • Use anti-virus/spyware programs to eliminate bandwidth hogging programs that use your internet. Free anti-virus programs include AVG, BitDefender, and Avast!, and free anti-spyware programs include Ad-Aware, Spybot - Search & Destroy, and SUPERAntiSpyware.
  • Also try installing a personal firewall to help block unwanted hackers and control what programs access the internet. Free firewalls include Comodo and Jetico.
  • If you have (or install) a secondary firewall, make sure to disable your computer’s default firewall. Running two firewalls at once will cause connection problems.
  • Do not use a cable splitter, as this could degrade connection flow.

A Wi-Fi antenna must gather in a wireless signal from the Wi-Fi transmitter that is connected to the Internet. You can build a Wi-Fi booster that will enhance the capabilities of the Wi-Fi transmitter’s antenna in all directions--making for a stronger signal for any device with a Wi-Fi receiver to pick up. A satellite dish, a few tools and items from a hardware store are all you need. The omnidirectional antenna you will make does not violate any warranties on the Wi-Fi transmitter or on any of the devices that will be picking up the Wi-Fi signal.

Instructions

    • Take the satellite dish over to the Wi-Fi transmitter.
    • 2
Place the tip of the Wi-Fi transmitter’s antenna against the back of the satellite dish at its center. Draw around the tip of the Wi-Fi transmitter’s antenna with the black marker. Remove the Wi-Fi transmitter’s antenna from the satellite dish.
    • 3
Put a sheet of newspaper on a table. Put the satellite dish face down on the sheet of newspaper.
    • 4
Select a drill bit that as closely matches the size of the hole as possible. Unlock the power drill’s drill holder. Put the drill bit into the power drill. Lock the power drill’s drill holder.
    • 5
Drill a hole through the satellite dish at the point where the marker was used.
    • 6
Take the satellite dish over to the Wi-Fi transmitter.
    • 7
Push the tip of the Wi-Fi transmitter’s antenna through the hole in the back of the satellite dish.
    • 8
Wrap duct tape around the antenna where the wire meets the hole to secure it in place. Turn the satellite dish over.

How to Make a Blogger Account

0 komentar
source:http://esl099-hela.blogspot.com/2012/01/how-to-make-blogger-account-directions.html
1. Create an account (www.blogger.com)
  • You will need to first create a gmail email account (gmail.com) if you do not already have one – if you do this, write down your gmail email name and your password right away so that you can find them again to log into Blogger later
  • You may need to input your cell phone number to verify your account and receive a verification number by text.  If you do not have a cell phone that can receive text messages, please ask a friend to have it sent by text to their phone.

2. Create a blog and give it a title that has your first name in it.
  • Your blog’s name can be creative, just be sure you have your name in it, too (e.g., Rebekah’s Corner; Hugo’s Café; Lemondrop Mountain (Rebekah); Ari’s Super Cool Party Place)
  • You will also need to select your URL address – this is the address that will be at the top of the page in the URL box when you are on your page – and the address that anyone can type into the search box to go to your blog
    • A good URL will have your first name and something about your class (e.g., rebekah-esl-blogspot.com; hugo-art-blogspot.com) or your blog’s name (e.g., esl099-hela.blogspot.com)
    • If the URL you select does not work, that means someone else is already using that address for their own blog page, and you need to select a different URL name – maybe by adding numbers to your name
    • Write down your URL address so that you can remember it and can share it with classmates if you need to
  • For your privacy protection, DO NOT use your last name on the blog name or in the URL – you don’t want too much personal information available to everyone on the Internet!

3.  Select a “template” (background design) for your blog and then go to the “Design” tab at the top to set up your blog page to set up your blog page.
  • Look at the “Header” and select “Edit” – here you can add a few sentences to the top of your blog to describe your blog and you can add a picture or image to the top of your blog.  Search for a picture you like on the Internet (images.google.com) and save it to your Desktop. Then “Browse” for the picture and upload it to your blog’s header.
  • Go down to the side menus and go to “About Me” and select “Edit” – here you should write a few sentences about yourself in the “Description” section.

4.  Go to our class blog page at this URL: http://esl099-hela.blogspot.com
  • Look at the first blog posts (below the picture) and post a comment for your class section that has your blogger URL address in it

5.  Set up your blog to connect to other blogs:
  • On the side menu, select “Add a Gadget” and add “Blog List”
  • After you have added “Blog List” it will be called “My Blog List” on your menu.  If you are in “Design” select “Edit” and if you on your blog page (in “View Blog”) select the tools picture to edit.
  • When you edit your “My Blog List,” you can add other blogs to follow.  Please add our class blog’s URL (http://esl099-hela.blogspot.com) to this list.
  • Then add the URL of each of your classmates to this list (you can copy and paste these URLs from the comments for your class on my blog)

NOW YOU ARE ALL SET UP in BLOGGER for our CLASS BLOGGING!

A few more things about using Blogger:

  • You can always see what your blog looks like to everyone by going to “View blog” and you can always change your blog by going to “Design”

  • To change your Profile (and add a photo that will appear on your blog page), you will need to “Edit Profile” and “Edit Photo” when you first log into Blogger and are on the “Dashboard” page.

  • In Blogger, you can have more than one blog!  Just create another blog (“create a blog”) when you first log into Blogger (when you are on the “Dashboard” page).

  • You can easily edit your blog posts, even after you have already posted them. Just click on the little pencil icon (which means “edit”) and the post will reopen and you can change anything on it and then re-post it.

YOUR FIRST BLOG POST

Your first BLOG ASSIGNMENT will be making your first blog post.

To post a new message to your blog, go to your Blog Page (“View blog”) and at the top of the page, you can select “New Post”

Title your post “Introduction” or “Welcome” and then type up your message.  At the end, you will need to click the “Publish Post” button so others can see it!

How to start google adsense account

0 komentar

By , About.com Guide
Starting a new account with Google AdSense is one of the easiest ways to start monetizing your blog. While Google AdSense might not make you rich, it's a simple and useful tool. In fact, it's usually the first step bloggers typically take to earn an income from their blogs because it is so easy to get started.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 10-15 minutes to open an account. Additional time to research the options to monetize your blog.

Here's How:

  1. Read the Google AdSense program policies.
Familiarize yourself with what you can and cannot do as part of the Google AdSense program to ensure you're prepared to start your new account.
  2. Visit the Google AdSense home page.
Click on the 'Sign Up Now' button in the upper righthand corner of your screen.
  3. Complete the online application.
You will need to provide your blog's URL and primary language as well as answer some questions related to the rules of the Google AdSense program. You'll also need to provide your payment information to receive the money you generate on your blog from Google.
  4. Access your new account and review the ads available to you.
Google AdSense provides a wide variety of advertising options to bloggers from text ads to image ads and more. Take some time to research everything that's available to determine what will work best for your blog.
  5. Select your ad design choices.
Once you've decided which ad opportunities are best for your blog, select them. Google will provide a snippet of HTML code to you after you make your selection.
  6. Insert your Google AdSense HTML code into your blog.
Copy and paste the HTML code provided by Google into your blog's template. One of the easiest ways for a beginner blogger to do this is by inserting a text widget into his or her blog's template and pasting the code in the widget.
  7. Let Google do the rest.
It may take a few hours or a few days for Google to start serving ads on your blog. Google will search your blog to determine the predominant subjects of each page. When readers visit your blog, the HTML code you pasted into your blog from Google will activate and relevant ads will be displayed based on each page's content.
  8. Collect your money.
Remember, Google AdSense typically pays based on click-throughs (the number of times people click on an ad). Therefore, Google AdSense is unlikely to generate a large income for you, but every bit helps!

Tips:

  1. Read and adhere to the Google AdSense policies in full before you sign up for a Google AdSense account. If you violate any of the policies, your account will be cancelled.
  2. Take some time to perfect your Google AdSense program once you get started by learning the steps you need to take to increase your Google AdSense earning potential.
